Our History
TRANSART has been providing arts and cultural programming and consulting services throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley for over twenty years.
Greer Smith, TRANSART’s founder, established the organization with assistance from a cultural initiative sponsored by the New York State Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Caucus through the office of Assemblyman Roger Green.
TRANSART’s initial exhibition home was the library at Medgar Evers College/CUNY in Brooklyn, New York. After organizing exhibitions on art and history and then making them available to travel to cultural organizations throughout the tri-state area (NY-NJ-CT), TRANSART resolved to settle in the Mid-Hudson Valley where it now delivers various programming and exhibits to schools, communities and other public spaces. We continue to operate our programming with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, New York Council for the Humanities, New York State Council on the Arts, Arts Mid-Hudson and other arts & cultural organizations, as well as the support of local government entities.
Our commitment is to enrich the experience of living in the Hudson River Valley, which extends from New York City to Lake Champlain. While we focus on people that have been historically underserved, our goal is to enhance the cultural environment for everyone. We are meeting the need for better access to culture and art to offset generations of miseducation - restoring pride in culture.
